Our trip to Chinatown! Saturday 20 July 2013 @ 09:35

Before we start, I'd like to say this post is very overdue. We went to Chinatown and Little India about a month ago, actually.

Anyway, let's start! This post will just be our outing, and there will be another post by Justina introducing the history of Chinatown and Little India.

We reached Chinatown in the afternoon. Look at our happy faces!

Above - this picture was taken from above. The red signboard is promoting bak kwa by a famous shop. For those who do not know, bak kwa is a Chinese sweet-and-salty dried meat product that is usually consumed during Chinese New Year. I'm craving for some bak kwa now!

Above - tiny Justina, Lydia and I looking at Germaine who is taking this picture!

Not many people walking at that hour as it was a weekday and it was still office hours.

We were walking along the pavement when....

WE SAW THIS!!! This rickshaw was displayed just outside the Chinese Heritage Centre. We couldn't touch it but at least we could take a picture with it!

A bit of history... rickshaws were very popular and were the mode of transport before trains and cars took over.

Happy Lydia with a SamSui woman statue!
Below are some pictures that show the everyday daytime life in Chinatown...

Look, chinese paintings of a dragon! Dragons are symbolic to Chinese as they symbolise happiness and longevity, among other things.

More chinese paintings for sale...

Above - in this shop, they were selling items such as chopsticks and Chinese teasets and Chinese fans! It was a myriad of colours!

Here are some more products that Chinatown shop owners are selling...

Above - These lions are from the lion dance, and they symbolise good fortune for Chinese.

Above - These cats are known as Prosperous Cat, which are usually seen in shops to bring prosperity to the business.

Above - Traditional Chinese garments are sold here. Isn't it colourful?

More clothes...

Above - this is how the windows in the olden days look like.

So many different sizes of calligraphy brushes are sold here!

Red lanterns!

We chanced across these; they were promoting Singapore Mint.

The red boxes you see above are actually mail boxes! We were so surprised when we saw them, we had to take a picture to show you all!

More calligraphy brushes, some Chinese jewelry storage boxes, Chess figurines and teddy bear phone keychains

We spent time in Chinatown immersing ourselves in Chinese culture, remembering what our culture is about. I think it was extremely satisfying as this NE project gave us the chance to go back to remember our heritage and appreciate it. I think Chinatown is an important place to Singapore, as Singapore is becoming more modernized and this is one of the few places left to remember our heritage.

We hope you have enjoyed this post and learnt something!

I leave you here with Mark Lee smiling. I think he was promoting the aforementioned bak kwa!

Signing off,

Charlotte :)
